  • From patrick houston on Mercedes Sprinter Clutch Replacement (T1N, NCV3, VW Crafter and other MB)

Hello Steve, my Merc SLK 200 manual 2003, 69000 miles, has like very many of these cars, the dreaded 1st/2nd selection woes. 1st is a forced selection, then 2nd, is selected by a strong hold of the lever towards the passenger side, as I slowly select 2nd to prevent crunch. . The feel for 2nd, is ‘rubbery ‘selection, akin to heavy oil preventing the syncromesh ring from allowing a slick selection. All the other gears including reverse are ok. There is a squeal initially from release bearing on first clutch application, then it behaves after that. Have changed oil to recommended MTL, and dropped oil level as recommended; no effect. In your experienced opinion, is this still , Air in system, or Clutch / Bind or Syncro. replace by expert.

      Hi Patrick,
It could just be worn synchros, however if you can change gear by forcing the lever over I wonder if the lever selection mechanism is perhaps worn, bent or just plain tired. As you may have read we did actually find on one occasion a lump of loadstone jammed in a gear selection mechanism of a 2004 SLK causing selection problems, this had spun up from the road and wedged itself in-between the selection rods restricting movement, once it was removed… perfect. I would double check the mechanism and be sure the is well there.

      Hi Des,
You will need to buy CANBUS warning free LED lamps, often those from China state CAN-Free, but in reality they are not. Go to an auto store, speak to the guys there and they will point you to the correct lamps with the resistor network that fools the car into thinking it has filament lamps installed.

  • From robert on Sprinter Fuel Rail Pressure Regulator Problems - Poor Starting

Hi .. I have a problem with the Viano 3.0 cdi 2007. After changing the fuel filter, the yellow engine fault warning light comes on and the fault is 2020-001 .. which is the most likely fault: pressure regulator carill, or flow regulator by the low pressure inlet? Thank you very much Regards

From Steve Ball on Sprinter Fuel Rail Pressure Regulator Problems - Poor Starting

      Hi Rob,
Start by replacing that filter with a genuine MB part, often there are different filter screen sizes in the aftermarket ones, if there isn’t a leak or something similar on the replacement then try fitting a genuine part with new seals.

  • From peter farrimond on Sprinter Fuel Rail Pressure Regulator Problems - Poor Starting

    Hi Steve
My 2008 Sprinter 311CDI suddenly cut out whilst driving and wouldn’t start again my mechanic plugged it in and there is no fuel pressure registering there is a good supply coming from the low pressure pump so the high pressure pump was removed and tested by a specialist result being the pump is good, what would you suggest we try next?one thing that did show on the diagnostic machine was a faulty crank sensor which was renewed but the machine is still saying incorrect signal from crank sensor but my mechanic says this will not effect the fuel pressure?
    Hope you can help.

      Pete,
There may be an issue with the cam sensor. The crank and cam sensors work in tandem to time the injection system. If there is a recorded Synchronisation Error code this will hold off the fuel pressure and prevent starting. Fuel pressure is cut if there is any factor occurring with the engine controls that could cause damage.

  • From Henry Van Campa on Mercedes Benz Sound 5 Radio CD Player HA1111 Hidden Test Mode Menu

HI Steve, very handy info. Saved me buying a new headunit because I needed to get AUX input. Just got a cable from Ebay and enabled AUX from service menu.
Another feature I have been using is shortwave band which is limited to 5.8 to 6.25 kHz only. But it allows me to listen Radio NZ shortwave broadcast here in Australia.
    Thanks

  • From Jack on Sprinter (T1N) Rear Spring Replacement

    Nice Read,
Got an auction 4×4 313Cdi 2002 model van way up north in Norway and nursed it 18 hours drive down towardss Oslo region.
Wondered why it was leaning to the right while parked and found the broken leaf spring.
Luck hasd it break right in the middle so it was drivable.
I can not see paying soo much for an original part that breaks so looking for an aftermarket set or a used original.
Can you point me to anyone who sells cheaper after market springs for teh t1n with single leaf?
    Warn Regards from Norway

  • From Glenn DelConte on Unusual Intermittent Electrical Power Problems Mercedes Sprinter

Interesting and informative article. It all seems to come together now. 2005 Sprinter here. First, occasional turbo off while driving a distance, going into limp mode, then turn signals and hazard acting up, then intermittent wipers stopped after first “wipe”, now I get a START ERROR. If I stop and turn off the van after limp mode and restart, it returns to normal. As a former mechanic, I opened the steering column cover and was able to move the right side connector? up and down, which began to clear these problems. I have not looked up in the right side of the fuse block, but it feels like a long connector. I am curious, if I begin to follow your removal instructions with the red live cable, will everything be okay while removing and cleaning the unit, as long as I do not short the live cable? Thank you very much

  • From Rodrigue on Mercedes older series diagnostic fault code reading. W124 R129 & others

    Hi
    I have a w202 1994 manual.
I made the blink tester but can you give the codes related to the blinks for this exact model?
    10x for your help!

  • From Tom on New turbo - still no boost! Mercedes Sprinter

Hi I have a 2013 2.1 CDI sprinter I’m at the of my tether with it I really love the van but it has no guts when it comes to a hill, so far I have changed under advice the dpf, turbo, numerous sensors sadly this has not fixed the problem.

I’m just so fed up with so called experts and no one seems keen to look at it they say the boost pressure code is to vague to narrow down the fault.

So if you can save my sanity I would be forever in your debt

From Steve Ball on New turbo - still no boost! Mercedes Sprinter

      Hi Tom,
You need to engage the services of a garage with a Star code reader. If the fault code is roprting only vague information it is not interpreting the ECU information accurately enough to be useful. A MB specialist or Main Dealer should be able to drill down on the general code to specifics within that group and so pinpoint more accurately the issue. Well worth the investment, especially if you have been paying parts-darts trying to fix the fault.
      All the best
