  • From Martin on Mercedes Diesel Injector Advice - Sprinter and others

Steve thanks for the write up.
Mine is the W639, 115. I’ve the start of the black death on the rear injector, the worst to get to.
From others responses I’m assuming the injector removal and seat clean up is possible without the need to remove the head.
Is the steel plate above the engine, and below the wipers, removable or is the job carried out with this in situ also ?

From Steve Ball on Mercedes Diesel Injector Advice - Sprinter and others

      Hi Martin,
Yes you can remove the plate, it makes the job far easier and this plate would be removed if you needed to say remove the engine so although takes a while to remove will open up access for the job in hand. The rear most injector is always the worst to deal with either in Sprinter or Vito, some pullers are low height to allow you to use them within the confines if you get into trouble.

Hi can you help me with a code for the stereo the VIN is WDB2020282F521418

From Steve Ball on Mercedes Sprinter Radio Code Decoder

      Hi there Manny,
This VIN is not listed, if you would like to pull the radio from the dash and let me have the full Becker serial number from the side of the radio on the white sticker (if it is the original radio) then I will have a go at getting the code for you.

    Thanks again Regards Kerry

  • From Kerry on Mercedes Sprinter Turbo - Limp Home - Diagnosis and Fault Finding

Hi Steve Brilliant info very useful indeed, iv read through & have not come across the problem I have so if you could help it would be super, I have a 2005 Sprinter 903 Mk2 Curtain Sider which drove perfect no problem at all until 3 weeks ago it suddenly went into limp mode while overtaking a fully loaded HGV very ashamed I was too when the hgv left me in the 2nd lane almost stationary lol & has been no better since. To make it worse when I have driven a few mile (which can take a while) if I turn it off it will not start at all & almost sounds like its out of fuel, if I leave it half hour it will start first flick of the key I can drive a few mile before it goes into limp mode again, I have another Sprinter that goes into limp mode now & again if you dip clutch turn key off & on again lift clutch up its fine again but that cant be done with this one as it wont start again, tank is full of fuel & iv had a new mb fuel filter fitted as well as new pipes to the filter. It never fails to start first thing its only once it has been driven for a few miles, no warning lights come on dash so im stumped what it could be. It has been checked for air & fuel leaks but all fine. Can you shed any light on it please. Thank you Kerry

      Hi Kerry,
It sounds like it could be a thermal problem with the camshaft sensor. This lives on top of the rocker cover at the back. All the symptoms you have would point to this at a first guess. You would really need a code read to be a little more certain of where the problem lay but that would be my first line of approach if I had no access to a diagnostic reader. • From Robert on Mercedes Sound 5 Auxillary Audio Input Modification

    Hi Steve
Further to the questions the other day,
my previous sprinter ( a mid 2007 model pre seering wheel controls etc) had a sound 5 fitted to it and I fitted a audio 20 to this van although i did have to buy a set of leads to reconfigure the connections into the back of the radio and this worked ok with out requiring a code)

My question is the van was remapped by super chips as is my new van would this make any different to the radio requiring to be decoded,
    Please excuse my ignorance

    Best regards robert

      Hi Robert,
I cannot answer your question – but I suppose its possible. I really cant see the higher end audio system having no ‘theft protection’, especially as the base radio does! Maybe you have hit on the answer, its great news for you whatever the reason… There could be a chance that the replacement radio was originally decoded before being taken from the other vehicle to fit in yours I suppose.
Thanks for getting back to me with the results of your findings, keep me posted on your 2014 swap out.
      All the best

  • From tim Rogers on Mercedes Diesel Injector Advice - Sprinter and others

Hi there mine had this black death took me a day and half to clean off and take injector out. Ive put it all back together again but will not start even pulled it down the rd. I have a light on the dash( edc) i have turned this out 4-5 times but comes back on. Can someone help with this dont no what else to do.

    • From Craig Bailey on Mercedes Diesel Injector Advice - Sprinter and others

Look at each injector plug, are they all sitting onto each injector properly? If one looks like it’s not on as far remove and clean. Also check if any of the lugs have snapped if so use zip ties to hold on. (You can buy the harness connectors from eBay if they have snapped but zip ties work just fine)

If it still won’t start look at all the other wiring that was covered In Black Death it may have been damaged (when cleaning)

Did the injectors come out ok or did you use a puller and spilt them?

From Steve Ball on Mercedes Diesel Injector Advice - Sprinter and others

      Hi Tim,
There is a chance there is either an electrical connection issue on the injector plug, no connection or not connected properly of any injector will cause it to not start. Recheck the wiring and look for damage to loom, its easy done when cleaning that mess off! Also check the cam sensor at the back of the rocker cover, there is a short loom section that also goes over the injectors, make sure this is OK too.
      All the best

  • From Helgi Axel Svavarsson on Mercedes Sprinter Turbo - Limp Home - Diagnosis and Fault Finding

    Hi Steve
I have a 5 silender 2,7 CDI engine that has very strange behavavior, It is very powerless under 2000rpm, and is realy dangerus is trafic due to its very poor accileration. The boost actuator engades when the engine is started up but does not move at all after that when reving up., After 2000rpm the power is ok, but not exelent. When I floor it in neutral from low idle it takes up 3 seconds to reach 2000rpm. and it is even slower when driving it. What would you recomend me to do?
    Best regards
    Helgi from Iceland

From Steve Ball on Mercedes Sprinter Turbo - Limp Home - Diagnosis and Fault Finding

      Hi Helgi,
You really need to start with a code read to find the area of problem. Quite often the main issues are boost pressure leaks in split pipes or poor connected hoses from the pressure side of the turbo, through the intercooler, and to the manifold. Any problems here will set the engine into limp home (the symptoms you have). A code read will tell you all you need to know, find a local independent MB dealer/auto shop and get the codes read first. This will give you the best chance of a fix.
      Best Regards

  • From Craig on Poor First Gear Selection - Manual Gearbox Problem W639 Vito - Cure

Hi Steve,I have a 56 plate merc sprinter, there is a lot of play in the gear stick, and I have poor first gear selection.would be greatfull for any advice.

From Steve Ball on Poor First Gear Selection - Manual Gearbox Problem W639 Vito - Cure

      Hi Craig,
Poor gear selection and sloppy shifter usually points to a worn selector cage on the gearbox. This the frame that controls the motion of the shaft in the top of the gearbox that physically selects the gears. You can get underneath and have a good look see if any of the pivots are worn. There is little to do but to swap the complete cage assembly as individual parts are not available for the assembly. Before condemning the cage make double sure the cable adjustments are correct and investigate too see if the selector ball under the gear knob itself has not started or has broken up. These are all possible causes.
Let me know how you get on.
      All the best

        Hi Steve,
Thanks for the reply to my post, and sharing your knowledge,I had the gear selector cage checked out and your thoughts on this turned out to be correct.there was excessive play as a result of wear/tear,so all should be good when I get this changed.i will definitely come to you for advice in the future before going to the garage.much appreciated, keep up the good work.
        Many thanks.Craig
