      That is great news Stephen,
It seems the oil had already been re-graded before your service oil change and you correctly added the original OEM grade. Changing it back to slightly lighter oil put things back as they were.
      All the best

    Hie Bruce

I have a Mercedes sprinter 511 CDI 2008. It was involved in an accident and the sump and starter went. The exhaust also was squashed. I have removed the exhaust. If I start the vehicle it starts very well. It idles and switches off. If I remove the EBP sensor it idles and drives but if I put it back it stalls. I bought another sensor but still the same. What could be the problem? I am a lay man. Thanks Bruce

      Hi Bruce,
If I have understood correctly then running the van without the exhaust will probably cause this issue as there will be no back pressure in the exhaust system and the 02 sensor reading will also be affected . Once the exhaust is back in place all should be Ok.

      All the best

  • From Hamanhig on Mercedes Benz Sound 5 Radio CD Player HA1111 Hidden Test Mode Menu

    Hi Steve
Just as Tom said in the first comment I too came across this site while looking for something else and sure glad I did. For starters I figured out what all the settings are. So thanks loads.

I have an issue with my system which I have been trying to find a solution to for a while and it seems that I can’t find anything. Maybe you’ll have an idea.

Everything on my system works fine except whenever I play a CD, the first track will play for about 60-90 seconds and then it will suddenly stop. No matter which button I’ll push it just wont work. If I remove the CD the radio will work fine. The CD will only start playing again if I tun the ignition off and leave it off for a few minutes. Then the episode repeats itself. Works for a minute or so and then stops.

I had the same issue a couple of months ago and one day it suddenly started working again. I had my car serviced and the problem started again. My mechanic tried to figure it out. I thought it might have something to do with the computer reset he did after the service to clear the service reminders, so we did a couple of resets but nothing.

I did test it with many disks so it’s not an issue with just one cd.

Well been trying to find some solution so far nothing. If you have any sort of idea how I could fix it it would make my day,

    Thank you

      Hi there,
this sounds like an internal laser assembly problem, commonly this due to dust or debris on the CD laser lens module. (its a pretty harsh environment inside a car) Try one of these: http://www.amazon.co.uk/Allsop-ProLens-Laser-Diagnostic-Cleaner/dp/B000CM47KU/ref=sr_1_1/278-8285295-2509245?ie=UTF8&qid=1418322219&sr=8-1&keywords=allsop+cd+laser+lens+cleaner here is proof and results of testing, it does actually work if dirt is the problem on the lens: http://www.tnt-audio.com/clinica/cd-lense.html If this does not work, either suspect the lens focus or a restricted travel of the laser reading head on the CD deck itself. A repair of this kind would be done by a car audio specialist.

  • From Mike on Mercedes Sound 5 Auxillary Audio Input Modification

Hi Steve, thanks for the info on ‘test mode’. I have a AU 2010 vito120 with the S5 radio fitted and have been having issues with poor rx on fm. Using this test mode I was able to turn on the fader, Rds and the amp functions- now I will see if my FM rx issues have improved. FM problems suddenly occurred after the last Svc visit re aircon issue. Is there a possibility that the dealer has inadvertently changed a radio setting while connected to the vehicle?

      Hi Mike,
Its more likely that they disturbed the radio antenna connector or crushed the antenna wire when inside the middle section of the dashboard. I would remove the radio/centre console and check all is well with the antenna connection / plug. Its also worth just looking behind the rear view mirror, behind the roof trim, to ensure the antenna connection is still attached to the screen element correctly.
Whilst its a possibility, I feel its unlikely they changed any radio settings and more likely they physically disturbed something.
      All the best

  • From Bruce Cluley on Mercedes Sprinter Turbo - Limp Home - Diagnosis and Fault Finding

Have a 2000 311 cdi, approx. 148,000 miles. It had been standing for a long while before I bought it. It did have the EDC light on initially when we bought it so had all the filters changed, oil etc, new back end on exhaust and codes cleared at the time of oil change. and covered about 1000 miles with no problem at all. In fact it had been running beautiful, until about 10 days ago, when it just had no power/no revs above 3000. Called in to the garage explained the problem and seemed to be sorted by turning off ignition and restarting. This was intermittent for several days, and had several journey over a long distance where it was fine. A couple of journeys where I was on the move when it occurred and for the past three or four days its just been like it all the time. Restarting hasn’t solved the issue, so a couple of days ago, took it in and had a the codes read. These are the results from the print out.
P1330-8 STORED&CURRENT STARTER ACTUATION – CABLE HAS OPEN CIRCIT
P0600-4 STORED THE DATABUS IS FAULTY
P0600-8 STORED TRANSMISSION OF THE CAN DATABUS MESSAGE WAS
    UNSUCCESSFUL
P1615-1 STORED CONTROL UNIT CDI – THE VOLTAGE SUPPLU IS TOO LOW
P1470-8 STORED CHARGE PRESSURE CONTROL VALVE – CABLE HAS OPEN
    CIRCUIT OR SHORT TO GROUND
P1470-16 STORED CHARGE PRESSURE CONTROL – CHARGE PRESSURE IS
    TOO LOW

The mechanic cleared these, drove home 11 miles with no problem but was back again the following morning. I just wanted to see if these codes could or would shed any light on the problem. Have replaced the boost pressure sensor and am currently about to go through the remaining advice, in your article at the top.

From Steve Ball on Mercedes Sprinter Turbo - Limp Home - Diagnosis and Fault Finding

      Hi Bruce,
This looks like it could be as simple as a voltage drop problem, check all the battery to body earth points (there are quite a few around the battery tray) also make sure the battery positive/neg lead is good connection to the battery and not corroded and that the alternator is providing the correct supporting charge. Check all the fuses in the fuse panel beneath the steering column for white corrosion and generally have a good look round. Be sure to check the loom on the engine as it falls from the inlet manifold by the engine mount this commonly chafes and gives rise to a catalogue of electrical issues with ECU and engine control.
      Hope it helps,
      All the best
      Steve

From Steve Ball on Poor First Gear Selection - Manual Gearbox Problem W639 Vito - Cure

      Hi Ben,
You will have to remove the blanking plug from the bell housing end and undo the torx head bolt on the end of the lay shaft, you can then split the box.
You wil find either the plastic tips are broken on the selector forks or the syncro hubs (2 on each gear) have collapsed. Have a look here at my post on Sprinter source: http://sprinter-source.com/forum/showthread.php?t=36069

You will find the plastic tips are not available as an individual part and come with the complete selector assembly !! As the selector assembly is almost the price of a recon box with warranty I am in the process of having some made from bronze by a local engineer.
