  • From Kev on Mercedes Sprinter Diesel Engine - Removal and Replacement (T1N)

Alright Steve looking to swap a 2005 313 with a 2002 313. They have different cc 2005 2148 and 2002 is 2151 I think. Will I need to swap ecu? Cheers Kev

  • From Paul Lightfoot on Sprinter Fuel Rail Pressure Regulator Problems - Poor Starting

    Hi Steve,

Loved reading through your replies to various questions, good on you for trying to help so many.
So to my question, I bought a 2000 T1N (x plate) its the 413 CDI with the 4 cyl OM611 engine in it, I drove it 250 miles home from scotland with what I was sold as a faulty injector and I have to say they had it diagnosed as that too. It certainly felt like an injector white smoke on tick over that really smells of diesel, cleared up when on motorway but on some steep inclines i was down to 4th gear at 45-50 mph struggling like it was running on 3 cylinders kind of feel.
Anyway got it home OK and it does start up but it takes a good 10-15 seconds on the starter, removed injectors and had them tested by a very reputable guy i know with print outs and he was amazed at how good condition they were in theyre near perfect operating he said, theres no signs of black death its immaculate under there and the van has only done 124k. So my biggest fear so far is a sticky ring, valve or a glazed bore but im hoping thats just my far fetched worst fear.
Other things to note is this van has sat for a year in a truck yard so could be moisture present in tank although ive put about 55 litres through it now. Im going to perform a compression test at weekend seeing as the injectors are still out. After that im thinking genuine fuel filter and also maybe drop the tank.
Could you give me any other pointers as to what i could look at regarding fuel pressure reg and any sensors that could cause this smoke its really over fuelling by the smell of it.
    Thanks so much
    Paul

      Hi Paul.
well worth a simple leak down check with clear plastic pipe on the bleed offs on top of the injector coils, make sure the quantities are even across the 4 injectors. this make doubly sure the injectors are sound. When running, white smoke can be caused by too much fuel as a result of lack of the correct quantity of combustion air, turbo, actuator or control valve or EGR (if fitted) issue. The turbo vac control valve is such a common part I would change this immediately on a van of this age and see how it performs – However if you have issues at idle this is most unlikely. You are fault finding the correct bits, get them discounted and then start to narrow the field.

Update on this issue, stripped whole front of van off took off the high pressure pump, replaces all the clear fuel lines as they were not good at connection points, new fuel filter, new belt as was cracked, also found 3 of the 4 glow plugs snapped these have been drilled out now with no damage and replaced with beru (Borg Warner) originals, glow plug module also had one of the fueseable links blown so replaced that even though i know it can be modified, new vac control valve was done early on, no change, turbo actuator seems to perform as it should according to your guide on how it should work, since putting everything back together I now have a fuel leak on the fuel pressure sensor at rear of the rail, im unsure as to wether this is the return line or the other line, or if it is indeed the well known to fail o ring kit. My thinking was as the fuel lines have all been rectified maybe a slight increase in pressure has seen it off? Anyway im picking up the repair kit genuine tomorrow morning so that will be done, if it still leaks ill replace the 2 hoses if it still leaks then I can only suspect the banjo fitting but doubtful i think.

The fuel temp sensor was a stored fault on Diagnostics so I replaced with a new Lucas unit only to find its still scanning as faulty. So improbably going to have to suspect wiring issue there, nightmare. Also I now have a coolant temp sensor fault after reasembley of the rad and all cooling system that I didnt have before…. maybe related to similar wiring issue???

Ill do the leak off test tomorrow as you suggest to confirm injectors are not at fault but other than that im still bellowing out white smoke that stinks of diesel badly really starting to run out of ideas but at least almost every sensor and every hose is now brand new haha

  • From Eddie on Synchronising the single button IR Mercedes Key

Can you simply swap a R129 homelink mirror ( 3 black rubber button on underside) with the rR129 Mirror that has the red/green light box attached to the underside?

My R129 is a 96 manufacture but seems to have the 1997 rear view mirror.

That should be possible for basic alarm function, unsure if there is other module required to have it fully functioning with homelink.

R129 1996. When I use the door key to lock/open I do not get any red/green light flashing on the door handles. (When the fob worked I did get the light flashes).

Should the lights flash on door etc when using the actual key?

No lights will flash with key alone, fob needs resynch by the sound of it.

  • From Charlie on Unusual Intermittent Electrical Power Problems Mercedes Sprinter

I have a crank no start issue. Or long crank start. Fuel pressure and map and crank sensors seem fine. Once running, it stays running. I’m getting a crank and map sensor error and a communication error. But like I said, crank and map are good, and replaced.

No idea why this is happening

Hi Charlie, you will need to bell out the wires back to the ECU (check continuity) from those two sensors. The loom is susceptible to breaking as it passes over the engine mount to the bulk head. There is a chance you have issues here.

    • From Steve Ball on Mercedes Sprinter Turbo - Limp Home - Diagnosis and Fault Finding

Hi Robert, sorry to hear your troubles. My suggestion would be to purchase a diagnostic reader you can simply plug into the diagnostic socket on the van and have a look yourself what codes are shown. This will enable you go talk to your tech with some info. It’s not complicated and for a small investment it could be to your advantage.

  • From Michael Thorne on Mercedes Sprinter Front Spring Replacement

    Hi,
Would any one be kind enough to tell me if i can upgrade my 3.5T 2015 Sprinter Luton 906 Front leaf spring with a more heavy duty spring? i am currently trying to up plate my Van. To get the max weight required i have to upgrade to a heavy duty Front leaf spring, just wondered if i could fit a 413 or such?

    Many thanks Mike T

    • From Steve Ball on Mercedes Sprinter Front Spring Replacement

      Hi Michael
It would seem the spring is the same through the range, as far as I can see fits 308/309/311/313/315/316/324 CDI
410/411/413/416 CDI 2 LEAVES. Have a look here, maybe drop them an email: https://www.eurofedern.gr/root.viewtag.en.aspx?idTag=B94E3247

  • From Duncan on Sprinter Fuel Rail Pressure Regulator Problems - Poor Starting

Hi…I am in France with a 316 5 cylinder diesel sprinter and I have identified that the pressure relief valve o ring may be the problem with starting when cold…no fuel pressure…and the longer you leave it when it has run the harder it gets to start…but it always starts..sounds like a leaky o-ring. Done everything else and now focussed on this. I have the service pack for the seals. You mention…and there is in the pack…a fibre seal. Before I take the thing out and drop the fibre seal which I am certain to do…where is the fibre seal located. I cannot see one on your images..you say “o-ring backed by a fibre seal” but I cannot see it. Can you enlighten me please. A mercedes specialist said he had never replaced the fibre seal and didn’t know what it was for and I could miss it out–not so sure.

    • From Steve Ball on Sprinter Fuel Rail Pressure Regulator Problems - Poor Starting

      Hi Duncan,
The fibre seal is at the back of the green o ring as pictured.

  • From Kev on Mercedes Sprinter Diesel Engine - Removal and Replacement (T1N)

Alright Steve. My 05 sprint shift sprinter has pressure in coolant suggesting head gasket problems. You any idea what a garage would charge to undertake the job? Vans hasn’t overheated so no engine damage. I am also considering attempting it myself. If I have a go is it better to remove whole engine or just head? Cheers Kev

    • From Steve Ball on Mercedes Sprinter Diesel Engine - Removal and Replacement (T1N)

      Hi Kev,
As they front of the van is fairly easy to strip and the engine almost walks forward quite easily, I would tackle this job out of the vehicle. I would remove the injectors while the engine remains in the van first as often they are a bit of a swine to remove and at least you have the engine fixed as opposed to chasing it round the workshop floor!
Its a big job, but if you are methodical and good with spanners very possible.
I have no idea of cost in your location, often its cheaper to fit a recon or good used if you are labour cost counting.
