Thanks for the info Steve,I have this problem when I bought My 2005 416 sprinter.changed the sender unit, was ok but the fault returned three months later, Seems to only happen when its cold. after driving for 10/15 minutes it comes good.I thought it may relate to the computer as I have seen this happen in industry on PLCs. I will go through your suggestions, PS there is an after market Bull bar fitted ,I thought the indicator earth may not be very good. But I have fixed them

      Hi Gary,
I bet its a problem in the fuse board under the steering wheel covered in the blog, especially the push in column connector at the top. Strip it down and have a look, you may get lucky! Let me know how you get on.

  • From Iain Cunningham on Mercedes Sprinter Turbo - Limp Home - Diagnosis and Fault Finding

    Hi there
I have just bought a 56 reg 311 sprinter ex tesco it is restricted to 60mph , how can I get this derestricted is this ecu or will it be a fuse some where
Or even get it put to 70mph
Will this be a main dealer job or can most garages do it

From Steve Ball on Mercedes Sprinter Turbo - Limp Home - Diagnosis and Fault Finding

      Hi Iain,
The restriction is set in a file in the ECU and configured when the vehicle is ordered. A dealer level Star Diagnostics computer can delete it for you but you would have to check the price at the Main Dealer, alternatively drop this guy an email at Williams Diesels (Kent) if you are located in that area I am sure they can help you out. dean@williamsdiesels.com they used to be very active on the forums and are very capable of doing the job. If they cant help I am sure they could recommend someone in your area that could.
      Hope that helps a little.

      Hi Alan,
I suppose it all depends what you need vs your budget. A simple code reader will give you some readout of OBD trouble codes and a way of clearing stored faults but sometimes codes are interpreted incorrectly as the reader is not specific to Mercedes vehicles. I use the Autel (this can be seen in use on the latest video post on the blog) as it allows multiple system diagnostics at a reasonably high level. Not only will it read Engine codes but will also do Transmission, ABS and SRS Airbag – the latter two are generally not covered with the cheaper units at all. My advice would be if you have a single fault you need rectified, go and visit an independent dealer/workshop where they can read your vehicle and tell you what is wrong to a fairly precise level for £45 ish – or if you want a machine that does most and other vehicles and you are going to do all your own maintenance then go for the Autel or similar at £230 GBP (probably the same in USD) Remember you can read other vehicles as well, so that makes it a little easier to get a return on your investment and offset the purchase cost by fault finding/reading friends cars etc!

  • From Stephen on Poor First Gear Selection - Manual Gearbox Problem W639 Vito - Cure

    Great post.
I have an extremely grinding change into third and living and working in Devon I’m up and down the gears all day.
Mine is a ’98 638 so I’m going to try the oil change first to see if that improves. It is an old van but I’m willing to give it a go.
Great post, good detail and very helpful.

      Hi Stephen,
Glad you found the text useful, does the gear change improve when the unit is warm or is this worse from cold? Can you live with pausing a little in the gate between gears, this is a bit of a get-by but does save your teeth jarring until you get sorted!
Let me know how you get on

From Steve Ball on Poor First Gear Selection - Manual Gearbox Problem W639 Vito - Cure

      Hi there Vikrant,
I am not familiar with this vehicle so can only presume. If the vehicle is almost new you should look to letting the dealer sort it out as maybe it is to do with the selector mechanism. If the vehicle is old, but new to you! then you can try a thinner oil. If you save the oil that you take out you can always put it back in if there is no improvement. I would look to using a single grade fully synthetic oil that holds its viscosity through a wide temperature range. My advice is to give it a go and see what improvements result. Please report back and let me know.

      Hi William,
I feel for you, its a poor situation to be in. If you feel you can have a go without the risk of damage to the head give it a try. If the head of the injector has broken off cleanly it may be possible to remove the rocker cover, pulling it off over the stub to reveal a little more of the injector to grab hold of but I am unsure at what point it has broken. There are several companies that specialise in removal of broken injectors but now the vehicle is immobilised the only option is to remove the head and send it to them for the work. Good luck – it really is a terrible situation to be in.
Give these guys a call in Yorkshire if in the UK see what they advise. http://www.apautodiagnostics.com/

      Hi Lucas,
Thank you for the feedback. Breaking through into the water jacket is not a huge problem if all the threads still exist in the hole, you can just add a small bead of silicone sealant to the pins threads before re-installing this should sort that out.
      Good luck.
