Hi there, Your VIN number is not recognised in the decoder spread sheet.
If you would like to remove the radio and give me the 8 digit Becker Serial number from side of the Audio 10 set I will try and get you the code.
      Regards

  • From Chris Yarnold on Mystery fan noise in cabin when ignition off - Vito W639

I have a 2009 model and wondered this for a while.
There is a likely a similar small fan in the dash in your model as well, behind the right hand side of the radio. I assume it is to keep air circulating around the radio and this are, as there is heat radiated out of the plastic heater vent behind and from the radio. It stays on for about 15 mins after the ignition is switched off.

Indeed correct, as outlined in the text the radio fan lies on the inside right of the centre dash aperture. This fan is basically a computer type brushless fan, almost like a processor fan. It is mounted on a crude steel L bracket and easily removed/cleaned. I suspect its a standard small form factor 12v PC fan if you ever needed to replace it.

  • From Dave Phillips on Mercedes Sprinter Turbo - Limp Home - Diagnosis and Fault Finding

    Hi Steve
My mechanic has told me that our van has fault code 2078 and says to check component B28/8 (pressure differential sensor (DPF))
    Plausibility error with ignition on.
Can you tell me what I need?

From Steve Ball on Mercedes Sprinter Turbo - Limp Home - Diagnosis and Fault Finding

      Hi Dave
This code refers to Diesel particulate filter differential pressure sensor, either the sensor is faulty or you have damaged wiring to the sensor or in the harness. ‘Implausible’ usually means either +12v or 0v signal is recorded often due to wiring damage (If fault still present after sensor replacement)
      Good luck

  • From Mat Morgan on Poor First Gear Selection - Manual Gearbox Problem W639 Vito - Cure

Hi Steve. thanks for your time and effort making this post and hopefully your still around to read this. i bought a vito 109 cdi 06 plate a few months ago (it has 80k on clock atm), thought i would do an all around oil change. Before i changed the oil in gearbox i only had the slight problem with 1st and 2nd now and again, and when changing into 6th the feel of the van was a little different to 5th etc. Anyways i checked with opie oils and was recommended fuchs titan sinto fluid FE SAE 75w synthetic manual transmission oil. i have since put this in and now have a problem with all gears being a little bit harder to get in. i am a carpenter so have a fair amount of tools on the van daily and can travel an hour each way to work (motorway driving) so i was wondering if your oil recommendation would be a good solution for my situation. hopefully youll get the chance too read this and if so many thanks for taking the time.
    Cheers

      Hi Mat,
The ATF-U has an approximate gearbox grade of 50w-60w ish, almost like engine oil weight. If the new 75w oil you have in has changed the way the van feels on a change its worth a go. I would suspect maybe that the original oil in the box was probably not the recommended 75w as things have changed so dramatically. Synthetic oils are good at maintaining their grade in both age and temperature so I would not have expected a great change replacing with new 75w. So chances are it may have not been that grade to start with. If you save the oil you take out it can always go back in if you feel its better than the ATF-U. Personally I think this could improve things for you and for the small financial investment and a little of your time well worth a shot.
Do let me know how you get on.
      All the best
      Steve

Hi Steve. Thanks for making such a fast reply, it’s much appreciated. This is the first time i have decided to take it upon myself to work on a vehicle i usually tend to stick with wood! haha. Anyways the oil that came out did not seem to match the oil the new oil but as it was black and not knowing enough about it i did not think to much of it so i think your right. I was awaiting your reply before going ahead with the swap so once again thanks for taking the time, i shall pick up some up from the local GSF tomorrow and change it over and i hopefully shall be looking forward to letting you know that it worked 🙂
        Cheers

  • From johnt on Mercedes E Class W210 Front Spring Perch Failure - Repair

Driving along,a loud bang and a scraping noise, pulled up up.The front ,nearside was almost touching the tyre.
Looked back down the road and there on the grass by the road was the spring, unbroken, intact.
I have since purchased a replacement part from merc. and I have to say ,that the standard of build is unacceptable. Not having examined the car apart from seeing which part was needed, when I picked the part up from merc. I just did not believe it ,a piece of steel not much stronger than a bean can.
The cup needs to be thicker, the concept of fixing on two small tabs is blasphemy ,it denies any integrity to what is acceptable.
Mercedes should remember that we carry precious cargo,s.
Mr mercedes man please beef up the fixing points and re,think it through,It will cost you another 20 dollars but don,t worry we will pay you for it. Ps love the car, what a car! perfect. (almost)

Indeed it is a very poor design and heavily documented suspension weakness. Thankfully it was subject to redesign in the W211.
      Thanks for the comment.

  • From Andy on Mercedes Diesel Injector Advice - Sprinter and others

    Hi
Thanks for the article, very enlightening. I’m wondering how often these seals are likely to fail?
I have an 04 213CDi and today discovered that I have a small coal mine on my injectors. I had some seals fail 2 years ago which ended up in me needing 4 new injectors as the garage mangled them (or some of them on removal). It cost me £1700 in total to have it repaired.
Since then I’ve only done around 18k miles and I’ve been told today that 2 seals have failed and the injectors are completely caked in black death.
Does that sound like the previous repair was substandard or could it be ‘just one of those things’ or symptomatic of something else?
It would be great to have some advice from those of you with experience of this type of fault before I go back to the garage (and possibly get fobbed/ripped off).

    Thanks in advance

    Andy

      Hi Andy,
You have pretty much all the answers you require from Sprinter Source but I would add that quite probably the seats were not recut when the new seals were fitted. Once an injector begins to leak the blow-by will start to cut into the soft aluminium surface of the seat. Cleaning them up or light re-cutting with the correct tool will prepare them for new seals and give them the best chance. The injector hold down bolts need to be torqued to the correct rating. It would be interesting to see if you were charged for a set of new hold down bolts on the original repair invoice, as these are specialised stretch-bolts that once set to the correct tightness, allow a little ‘spring’ when the head expands contracts etc. So if the old bolts were used there is a chance this could be the root cause. It has been seen.
Good luck with the garage, though personally I would think after this time there is little chance of any recovery.

      let me know
      All the best

        Thanks Steve,
Very informative again. I will try and locate the receipt, but I’m pretty sure that it was quite vague with the itemising.
I’m having an absolute nightmare with the damned van and just this week I’ve needed new glow plugs and camshaft sensor and then this morning came some horrible pop and rattle accompanied by a plume of smoke. Then non start, not turning over , then start with a rattle and plenty more exhaust smoke, then smooth driving ever since (well, for 10 miles or so) . I’m totally befuddled.
I might go outside and set fire to it and have a glass or 2 of wine.

From Steve Ball on Mercedes Diesel Injector Advice - Sprinter and others

          Mmmm
Sounds like a backfire! Backfiring is usually caused by incorrect mixture not combusting (or failing to completely combust) whilst in the cylinder then igniting in the exhaust. All due to the poor sealing/worn injector/s I would wager.
Most likely could be that an injector is worn/damaged and is ‘leaking down’. When turned off, fuel from the pressurised fuel rail dribbles into a cylinder through a worn injector nozzle, this can cause larger than normal amounts of fuel to pool in the cylinder of a standing engine. When you come to start it could in severe cases ‘hydraulic’ the engine from turning over. When it eventually turns over and clears, it spews unburnt diesel into the exhaust that then uncontrollably ignites- POP ! The upset and explosion in the exhaust along with raw diesel will cause smoking until its all burnt off. When you get to taking out the injectors have them pressure tested (leak off test) at a specialist before refitting them, if you have any duff ones get them reconditioned or fit a replacement. This if not dealt with could damage the engine and will certainly cause starting problems in the future with either a hot or cold engine.

Good luck with the garage. If it was me – put it down to experience and go elsewhere – then sound like you know what you are talking about when you speak to them ! Tell them whats likely wrong and what you want doing. Sadly all this will not be cheap – so make sure the reception has a chair handy!

is there a way to reset the computer so i can get a 2002 sprinter out of limp home mode, so i can take it to the dealer and get it fix.

the closest dealer is 45 min away and i dont think driving all the way on 2nd gear is good for the truck.

      Hi there,
You are pretty much stuck with it I am afraid, likely its a Sprintshift auto gearbox you have there, it will be locked into that gear until you get it out of LHM (Mercedes safety feature). If you had a manual gearbox model with vac turbo control, then there is a way to rig the turbo to get you to a garage with a little boost up to a maximum of about 3000rpm. With the auto box there is no getting around this problem. There are a few mobile auto techs with the capability to read the error codes on this vehicle and possibly get you fixed and running again without getting to the dealer. Sorry I cannot suggest anything else.
      All the best
